Stranger at the Hell Gate

Ash Krafton

Genre: urban fantasy

Publisher: The Wild Rose Press

Date of Publication: March 2013
ASIN: B00C14X6SG

Word Count: 20000

Cover Artist: Debbie Taylor

Book Description:

Jagger Sintallon, a half-demon warrior, has dedicated his existence to fighting demons who enter the world through Hell gates. A loner of conflicting ideals, he offers shelter to a troubled woman but knows he is too rough, too dangerous, and too cocky for her delicate nature.

Dedicated to Divine Will, Sonya Camael, a Seraph, is determined to discover why she is drawn to Jagger's doorstep and the reason behind her mission. She needs the demon's help but fears he may get himself killed before she can figure it out and the world slips into Hell's dominion.

Sonya faces grave danger with evil stalking her every move, and Jagger shouldn't care but realizes he cares more than he'd likely admit. Sonya knows Jagger cannot win this war alone, but will her divine intervention mean his imminent end? Or will just the right combination of Heaven and Hell set the world right once again?

Short Excerpt:

Jagger hung his head, looking very much out of patience. With an exasperated huff, he turned in place, his boots clomping. Cocky stance, head back, and eyes daring her to say something. But these things she only partially registered because when he turned to face her, his entire upper body—chest, face, arms—glowed with the marks of past insult and injury. And that sickle shape burned into the skin over his heart—
She whimpered, heart-sick to see him in this way. Her mother's blood cried out at the thought of what agony he must have endured to stand here now, so marred and wounded. Covering her eyes, she dispelled the Seraph sight and fought the tears.
"Hey." He was in front of her within moments, pulling her hands down and leaning to peer at her downturned face. "Hey, what's wrong?"
"You. You've been through so much. Just look at you."
"I'd rather not. I'm not a pretty guy."
"Jagger. These scars. You have countless hurts. I can't see a part of you that isn't injured." She raised her eyes, tears brimming on her lower lashes. "Let me help you."
"What, you're a plastic surgeon?"
She swallowed and regained part of her composure. "Better."
He looked alarmed and rocked back on his heels. "You don't mean—"
"Yes, I do." She held onto his hands and kept him from backing away. This felt right, this decision.
His eyes shifted. "Ah, I don't think it's a good idea, doll. Our kinds don't mix well."

Chatting with author, AmBear Shellea & #Giveaway - Heavy Metal Heartbeat

Monday, May 13, 2013.

Welcome back to Immortality and Beyond AmBear. Now that we’re settled in, let’s chat. Shall we?

BK: How did your writing journey begin?

AS: On a dark and stormy night, :) Just kidding. It started with the idea for The Pedalstem Lillie Series. Chaos Unleashed was my first published works.

BK: Please share with us how your current release came to life...

AS: Heavy Metal Heartbeat is book 2 in the Rock n Roll Paraphantasy Series. The series came to be due to my love of music and need to write a different kind of Vampire/Paranormal Story.

BK: Do you let your characters tell the story, or do you often fight with them on the direction it will take?

AS: Well, I would love to say I stand my ground, But no! My characters have free reign as for the story. I have an idea, but by the end its usually not where I started.

BK: How do you keep your writing different from all the others that write in this particular genre?

AS: That is a very difficult task indeed. I rely heavily on my creativity. I want not only my stories to be different but my Characters too. People will love them, they need to be as individual as you and I. Same character different name is kinda boring.
BK: Which character was your favorite to write for in this story? Why?

AS: Ozzie! He has become quite the Fan Fav too. He is sarcastic, funny and of course swoon worthy hott! He is definitely Alpha male material! As a hunter he is in control and takes no crap! Absolute Bad boy!

BK: Tell us about one scene you had the most fun writing…

AS: The scenes where Ozzie is in the 'In-Between' It is a total mind blow for him and the reader. I do ask ”Are you ready for the madness?” There is a reason for it.

BK: If you were stranded on an island, which character in your books would you most want to be stranded with and why, and what is one thing that would be a must-have?

AS: I would have to say...Sebastian. If I had to compare him to anyone, he is most like Ian Somerhalder with that winning crooked grin that is so damn sexy. The one thing that would be a must have on the island is a Magic wand, that way I could always have what I wanted, food, shelter, water, even if I had to magic it up :) In the world of magic anything is possible!

BK: Now for a little fun, tell us a bit about what your office looks like. Do you need silence to write?

AS: My office, hmm...it is quite a few places: in the living room scattered across the small coffee table, on my desk that sits in the office/spare room, again more paperwork littered about like confetti and in my purse, in the form of a notebook filled with chicken scratch that takes me hours to get through because I cant read my own handwriting.

BK: What do you like to do when you're not writing?

AS: You mean time to myself...What is that? :) Usually I am either Tanning, getting my hair done and getting the latest gossip at the hair salon, or running around with the hubby. We do hate to be indoors so much! Oh, and let's not forget keeping up with Game of Thrones! OMG, I love this show!

BK: What is one thing your readers would be most surprised to learn about you?

AS: I'm not sure...Probably that unlike regular girls I LOVE classic muscle cars and car shows! Holy Sheep, my dream car is a 1969 Shelby GT 500 and my next drool worthy car is a 2013 black on black Dodge Challenger, yes, with a Hemi! For anyone who doesn't speak car~ Its awesome! In Heavy Metal Heartbeat, Ozzie drives one! Fav character-fav Car...coincidence? Most definitely!

BK: What is the craziest thing you’ve ever wanted to write, or have written, even if it never reached public eyes?

AS: I would have to say, a scene that would make 50 shades blush and no it has not reached public eyes! * blushes *

BK: What is one piece of advice you can give to aspiring writers/authors?

AS: Never give up on this dream. It is meant to be hard so you will appreciate all that comes with it. If it were easy, everyone would be famous!

BK: What can we expect from you in the future?

AS: Well, closer to the end of this year, Stars of Fire will be released. It is book 3 in The Pedalstem Lillie Series published by Devine Destinies. There are also many WIP saved on PC at the moment. There is a sassy YA, Social Butterflies, An adventure story, which doesn't have a title yet and a Western Romance, Boots and Boys plus the other books in my current series'. So I plan to be around a good long time bringing to life many more plots and adventures.

BK: Where can readers connect with you?

AS: All over the place~

BIO:
Although I have always enjoyed writing, the dream to become a writer came when I read A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare, in the sixth grade. My early works, not published, were in the form of children’s stories I would read to my two daughters. I divide my days between the real world and the ones I’ve created. My life and my characters keep me very busy in my Mid-Western scene, where I live with my husband, and my children (both human and furry).

Synopsis:

Heavy Metal Heartbeat is one wild ride. Its twists, turns and mind games will leave you breathless and borderline crazy.

This rockin' adventure begins with Ozzie, who has awakened from a harsh brush with death. Just as he thought he overcame all the dangers of his supernatural survival, danger strikes with a vengeance. The news of the kidnapping of a loved one ignites his rage, unlocking a family secret and changing who he is forever.

Now he's in a rush to play hero and savior. There's only problem; What happens if the savior becomes a villain?

Ozzie's friends, with the help of his father, put him to the test to see if he can indeed be the hero that saves the day or the hindrance that gets them all killed. While visiting the in-between he is given the knowledge to overcome his situation. All he must do is embrace who he is. Who is that, exactly?

Turns out when you take a human man with an ancient bloodline, add in slash marks from a Wolf, a bite from a Vampire, the pure love from the woman he loves and piss him off, you get a man no one expected!

Bad Ass Hunter or Uncontrollable Vigilante?

Excerpt:

You have been marked, Son. By what, I do not know.”

He felt his father’s touch on his chest.

...You are, among us, are a fallen soldier. It is proof that you have been touched by the supernatural and come out the other side…but at what cost? At what cost, my son?”

His father fell back onto the couch and hung his head. Tears fell down his father's face as he wept. Ozzie's heart shattered like glass.
Father, I am right here. I am alive. I’m not a fallen solider. You felt my heart beat in my chest and blood surge through my veins. I don’t understand. Why are you crying as if I have died?”

His father’s dark brown eyes stared back at him.
Because you have, Son. This, you here, this is not my son. This is the work of supernatural witches. The tattoo is proof you are dead. It’s just a matter of time before we find out what dead you shall run with.”

For the first time in his life, his father looked at him as if he were something to pity. His chest felt as if knives made of fire and ice plunged into him to the hilt. He stumbled backward, his hand over his heart. His breath wouldn’t pass his lips and tears of anger rimmed his eyes. What used to be his heart lay in pieces somewhere on the floor. He watched his father move from the couch and head for the door.

Book Tour: Interview & #Giveaway with Kaitlyn Davis - Midnight Fire Series

Monday, April 15, 2013.

Welcome to Immortality and Beyond. May I offer you a drink?

How about a Moonlight Margarita?

BK: When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I think I've always known! Telling stories is just a part of who I am—it always has been.

BK: Please tell us a little bit about your current release...

Scorch is the fourth and final book in my Midnight Fire Series and I am SO excited to share it with you! The series follows Kira as she discovers exactly who and what she is after powers thought dormant awaken inside of her. And in this final installment, Kira lays it all on the line as time runs out, forcing her to choose between two very different lives and two very epic loves.

BK: What inspired this particular novel/book?

I've always loved vampire lore (what up, Buffy!) and I've always known I wanted to write a book that somehow involved vampires. But I never knew what it would be until I was walking on the beach, lost in a daydream, and it suddenly hit me—the sun! Magical beings who fought vampires by channeling the sun! Once that idea came to fruition, the story just flowed out of me.

BK: How do you keep your writing different from all the others that write in this particular genre?

I wrote the story that I really wanted to write and hoped that people would love it! I created new powers and new societies, but mostly I hoped my characters would be the difference. As long as readers connected to Kira and felt every emotion that she did, I knew I couldn’t go wrong.

BK: What was the hardest thing about writing this story?

Since Scorch is the last book in the Midnight Fire Series, the hardest thing about writing it was fighting the anxiety that I would let my readers down. There's always that self-doubt when writing—what if people hate it?!—but especially with this book. So many fans have reached out expressing their love for my story and my characters, and I wanted to give them an ending that will leave them happily satisfied—not disappointed. And I really think I succeeded!

BK: Which character was your favorite to write for in this story? Why?

Kira! She's a kick-ass heroine who is strong and defiant, but also vulnerable and uncertain. And I loved telling her story.

BK: Will this become a series? If so, what inspired it to be a series? OR If it is a series, what inspired it to become a series?

The story was just too long for one book! And I love a good series :)

BK: Now for a little fun, and into your everyday life, What is a day in your life like?

I wish I could say something glamorous, but my life is BORING! I wake up, go to my awesome day job, come home, and then write—my latest book, a Facebook shout-out, a blog post, a tweet, an interview… Somehow I squeeze dinner and the infrequent workout in too!

BK: What do you like to do when you're not writing?

Read! Or work on my photography! Or… guilty pleasure… watch all of my favorite reality television shows while eating a pint of Häagen Dazs ice cream!

BK: What is one thing your readers would be most surprised to learn about you?

I'm a complete goody two-shoes! I actually get anxiety from breaking the rules. Maybe that's why my main character Kira is so rebellious… I was indulging!

BK: What do you like to read? Who is your favorite author?

Anything! I love paranormal romance, historical fiction, epic fantasy, chick-lit—anything that sucks me in! Some of my favorite authors are J.K. Rowling, Cassandra Clare, Richelle Mead, Tamora Pierce, Robert Jordan, Raymond Feist, Scott Westerfeld, Sophia Kinsella, Lynne Ewing, and so many more.

BK: What is one piece of advice you can give to aspiring writers/authors?

Never give up! The only end of the road is the one you create for yourself.

BK: What are you currently working on?

A new series! I'm still brainstorming, but I'm going to switch gears and write a fantasy.

BK: Where can readers connect with you?

Wherever they want! Here are some links:

The Genesis by K.L. Kerr - Bewitching Book Tours

The Genesis
Blood of Ages, Book One
K. L. Kerr

Genre: Urban Fantasy

Publisher: Penrefe Publications

ISBN: 0955984556
ASIN: B00999FXZ0

Number of pages: 314
Word Count: 100,000

Cover Artist: K. L. Kerr

Book Description:

The vampires of Dayson city are preparing for war. Having lived in constant fear of the Archway Corporation for decades, desperation has forced them into action. Their solution is to bring the First vampire, Alistair, back from the dead, a warrior famed for eradicating entire armies in the name of his kind.

For fledgling vampire Catrina Malinka, the fabled return of some unknown deity falls low on her list of concerns. Between fending off strangers trying to kill her in her dreams and trying to rein in an uncontrollable power that no one else even understands let alone shares, Catrina is forced to fight her assumed role in the war against Archway, which threatens to send her down a path she doesn’t want to travel.

The first book in The Blood of Ages series, “The Genesis” is an urban fantasy about the inescapable nature of Fate and the corruption of power.

Excerpt: The First Feed

Catrina paid little notice to where they were headed, since she was too enrapt in the swirl of streetlights sweeping by the window to listen in on Fox and Rose’s conversation. Her attention broke occasionally when Rose laughed, which she did often. If Fox were the lion, as she’d imagined on their first meeting, that made Rose the hyena.
The nights in Dayson were never truly dark, and the days—which she would only ever be able to recall from memory from now on—were never bright. Skies in varying shades of grey were all that overlooked their fair city, and any break in infinite varieties of rain constituted good weather. Even so, her new eyes could make out the crescent moon floating amongst an ocean of stars as Rose parked the car outside a bar that looked like countless other rundown brick buildings scattered in amongst those made of concrete.
The music pulsed harsh and raw through the open doors, thunderous beats to dance to for those gathered inside the low-ceilinged, dark rooms. Rose left them at the entrance, quickly swallowed up by the mass of bodies.
Catrina followed Fox into the smoky room and was hit by a smell so fierce that it threatened to floor her. Beyond that of sweaty bodies laced with grime and grease from their days of hard labours, the unmistakable scent of blood rose in the air. So much stronger than what she’d sensed from Maria, and in such a tightly packed space, it came inescapably with every breath, like honey-sweet liquid iron sliding down her throat.
The people were all oblivious. No, not all of them. A few stood out, their movements fluid, more calculated. As they slipped through the mass, she noticed the path being created by people was wide enough for them both. The hunger sent sudden, urgent impulses that left her fingers twitching. She barely managed to keep at Fox’s back on the way to the bar, as a mist descended across her vision. So many people and so much blood pumping through frail bodies that seemed barely able to hold it in. Her head ached with the deafening sound of a hundred hearts thumping in time with the pounding bass.
In a far corner, Fox introduced her to a man, his clothes were the same colour as his raven hair, half-blended into the shadows. He didn’t need a name. Fox simply referred to him as “the Moderator.” The Moderator regarded her with hazel eyes too small for his face, tiny glinting gems set in alabaster skin, which snatched her, and the hunger’s, interest from the room’s other occupants. He offered her a hand as though proposing they dance. When she turned to Fox for an answer, he just nodded and left them. With butterflies in her stomach, she accepted the Moderator’s thin hand and let him guide the way.
“This is your first time feeding?” he asked in a soft voice, whispering in her ear to be heard over the music. Painful in its simplicity, the question left her insides churning. She just about managed a nod. “The hunger will torment you until you give it what it needs.” When she winced, he gripped her hand tighter; the pressure alleviated some of the pain. While not an especially attractive man, the Moderator’s presence was all-consuming, and his iron grip and piercing eyes ensured attention stayed on him, before the hunger could release her into the pack of waiting bodies. “I understand your pain, child, but the hunger must be appeased. Despite what you may think, you are not the one in control anymore. The hunger is its own master and you its slave. You will succumb to it when it craves its fill, or else you will both perish. Succumb often, and in careful doses, and given enough time, you will be able to control it completely.”
“And until then…?”
A jester’s smile stretched across the Moderator’s face. “Until then, you will feed like the rest of us.”
As they reached the edge of the crowd, her guide gestured to a man swaying out of time with the music, pupils dilated like saucers and mouth open wide. So this shaggy-haired stallion riding what appeared to be a permanent high would take her vampiric virginity. And while the hunger urged her forwards at the very thought, she saw reason to pause and tightened her grip on the Moderator’s hand.
“Don’t be afraid,” he said. “The hunger will show the way. And do not concern yourself with our friend’s wellbeing. Observe the skin.” He gestured the man’s shoulder, where she saw scant silver lines tracing all the way up his neck. The thin vest fitted to his shapely, muscled form proudly displayed the scars. “He is a donor. You will find many of their kind in places such as these. I can assure you, he is more than willing.”
When the Moderator released her, the hunger led on. For the next minute, she was no longer Catrina Malinka. She was the hunger. She may have forced the man easily twice her size up against the wall, leaning into him and savouring the musky scent rising from perspiring flesh. If he struggled or resisted, she couldn’t remember. He may have moaned as her fangs sliced through her gums and into the vein. As blood gushed like liquid fire, she too may have moaned, closing her eyes and letting the moment consume her.
New thoughts overwhelmed her sense of reason with each mouthful of blood pumping out of the fissure in his neck, as though for an instant she saw the world through this man’s eyes; the image of their naked bodies tangled together on an unmade bed in what she could only assume was this man’s shoebox of an apartment flashed across her vision.
Spurred, it seemed, by the same thought, he slid a hand up her back, trying to force her closer. But despite his urgency, he had all the strength of tissue paper when put against her. While she revelled in his weakness, the hunger subsided into anger the likes of which she’d never known.
Her dark eyes flashed open and fingers slipped around his shoulder, feeling the top of his spine underneath the thin stretch of skin. One quick twist, and he would be dead. Before she could get her fingers around his neck, strong hands pulled her away, which severed both the lustful thoughts and the absolute desire to destroy him.
The man struggled to breathe as he ran shaking fingers over his neck, but a lazy smile curled his lips nonetheless.
“Our saliva heals the wounds,” the Moderator said as she stared at her first “victim” lurching back into the throng of bodies. “The scarring only occurs from continuously providing donor services, or in cases where the human has been attacked. Here, the donors are safe and aware of what happens to them. Feeding out there—” He gestured to the bar’s entrance. “Is difficult and delicate when you choose not to kill. There will be certain situations where your actions can be more easily dismissed if you choose to feed on someone who does not know what you are.” Such sobering words set her eyes back on the Moderator, who regarded her cautiously, concern stretching lines on his face. “Tell me truthfully,” he said. “How did it feel?”
Without a second thought, she replied, “I wanted to kill him.”

About the Author:

Born and raised close to North York Moors, initial setting of American Werewolf in London, one might be excused for thinking K. L. Kerr's interests might lie with those furry beasts. But she has always preferred monsters of the fanged variety, having written the very first draft of her novel, The Genesis, aged sixteen.

When not writing, Kerr can be found playing the MMORPG, World of Warcraft, or listening to music from video game soundtracks. She still lives in the North of England, close to The Moors (keeping to the roads, naturally), with two cats who--like all cats--think they're people.
